New Study Discusses Permanent Sexual Side Effects from Propecia

By Cohen & Malad, LLP

A new study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine indicates persistent sexual side effects associated with the use of drug finasteride, which is marketed by Merck under the names Propecia and Proscar. Propecia is commonly used by men who suffer from male pattern hair loss (MPHL). This drug has been proven to regrow hair; however, ongoing studies like this one also suggest that permanent sexual side effects are associated with Propecia use.

Merck claims on its website that sexual side effects are temporary and will stop once drug treatment is ended. This new study conducted by Dr. Michael Irwig of the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences indicates otherwise and was specifically designed to follow men who experienced persistent sexual side effects for at least 3 months after stopping treatment to determine if their condition would change over time.
Of the 54 men who participated in this study 96% continued to experience sexual side effects when reevaluated on average 14 months after the initial interview. In fact, 89% continued to meet the definition of sexual dysfunction which includes factors such as sex drive, arousal, erection, and orgasm. The conclusion of his warns prescribers of Propecia and Proscar, as well as potential users, to be aware of the potential serious long-term risks of a medication used for cosmetic purposes.
Lawsuits have been filed across the U.S. by men who have suffered serious, lasting sexual side effects as a result of taking Propecia or Proscar. If you or someone you know has experienced long-term serious sexual dysfunction as a result of taking Propecia or Proscar for the treatment of your MPHL, you should speak to an experienced product liability attorney to learn of your legal rights and options.
