Update: Additional Children Allege Molestation By Greenfield Childcare Worker
Eight children have now accused former YMCA after-school program worker, Jericho Johnson, of molesting them. Prior to working at various Greenfield elementary schools via the YMCA after-school program, Johnson volunteered with children at Brandywine Church and was an aide at Shining Stars Child Care Academy. Parents whose children have been in the care of Johnson are asked to speak with their children regarding abuse, and contact the Hancock County 911 Center immediately with concerns, 317-477-4400.
The allegations in Hancock County highlight the broader issue of sexual abuse within the YMCA and organizations like it. With an extensive staff and volunteer network, the Y serves as a vital resource for youth development and healthy living. Despite their commitment to the communities they serve, the Y’s child and youth programming are still vulnerable to the unfortunate reality of abuse.
In August 2023, New York YMCA camp director Josh Horner was accused of sexual abuse of someone under the age of 13 and arrested. Horner, 34, was put on immediate administrative leave and is facing charges of first-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child. It has since been reported that in the years preceding, Horner worked at a total of five YMCA camp programs.
Survivors of abuse deserve to have justice, funds to support therapy and other recovery needs, and their story told if that’s what they wish. Bringing abuse to light, especially when it’s happened within a program or institution, may also result in relief for other affected individuals.
