Illinois Gynecologist Indicted for Sexual Assault of Patient
Dr. Fabio Ortega was arrested on September, 10, 2018 after a patient reported the gynecologist assaulted her during an exam. The patient stated the doctor touched her inappropriately and made sexually suggestive comments. It took authorities more than 18 months to investigate the claim which included questioning the doctor as well as staff from NorthShore University HealthSystem which employed the doctor. During this time, NorthShore University Medical Group terminated Ortega’s employment. The doctor’s license to practice medicine was also suspended according to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation following his arrest on the sexual assault charges.
Investigators uncovered another complaint filed by a former patient four years prior. This complaint accused the doctor of inappropriate behavior towards the patient. The woman told police Dr. Ortega called her on her mobile phone late and night and asked her questions of a sexual nature.
The former gynecologist has been released on bond and is expected to return to court in October.
