Uber Sexual Assault

Uber Sexual Assault Lawyers

The popularity of ride-sharing apps is undeniable. In the United States alone, more than 45 rides on Uber happen every second. Personal safety has become an increasing concern for both riders and drivers alike as events involving of assault –including rape, attempted rape, and physical violence — have been widely reported. Uber management recently released a report compiling data from 2017 and 2018 that discloses nearly 6,000 incidents of unwanted sexual contact between drivers and riders ranging from non-consensual touching to rape.

The five most serious types of sexual assault are listed below along with a total of the number of reports received between 2017 and 2018.

  • Non-consensual touching of a sexual body part – 3,000 reports
  • Non-consensual kissing of a non-sexual body part – 1,164 reports
  • Non-consensual kissing of a sexual body part – 766 reports
  • Attempted non-consensual sexual penetration – 587 reports
  • Non-consensual sexual penetration; including rape – 464 reports

These numbers are alarming. Even more so is the fact that sexual assault is one of the most under-reported crimes in the United States. Uber states the company is taking measures to provide a safe environment for riders and drivers alike and at the same time suggests that these numbers are likely to increase as more people become aware of resources available to survivors of sexual assault.
