The U. S. Department of Justice has launched an investigation into sexual abuse claims including mishandling of sexual abuse allegations and mistreatment of victims within the Southern Baptist Convention.

Reports of the depth of the sexual abuse crisis within the Southern Baptist Convention were first made public in 2019 by journalists from the Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News. These reporters conducted an in-depth investigation of sexual abuse claims that spanned two decades and discovered around 380 Southern Baptist Convention leaders and volunteers faced allegations of sexual misconduct involving over 700 victims, many of whom were children. Of course, these numbers only paint a portion of the picture as many sexual abuse victims do not come forward to report. There are over 47,000 Southern Baptist churches spread across 41 state conventions.
