Failure to diagnose hyponatremia

Indianapolis, IN Attorneys for Failure to Diagnose and Treat Severe Hyponatremia

Hyponatremia is a serious condition of a low level of sodium in the blood. Sodium is important to the proper function of many bodily systems. Symptoms of low blood level sodium include nausea and vomiting, headache, confusion, loss of energy or drowsiness, muscle weakness, muscle spasms or cramps, seizures or coma. It is important to seek medical help if you believe you or someone you know is suffering from hyponatremia.

If a physician is negligent in treating a patient with hyponatremia the result can be osmotic demyelination syndrome. Osmotic demyelination syndrome is a brain cell dysfunction. It is caused by the destruction of the layer covering nerve cells in the middle of the brainstem and is usually fatal.

Failure to diagnose and treat severe hyponatremia

In a case where the patient was ill with the flu for several days, his low electrolytes were not monitored properly.  Long bouts with the flu can cause a patient’s sodium levels to get very low and can be critical.  When finally diagnosed, the patient was infused with too many nutrients to raise his sodium levels too fast causing him to develop osmotic demyelination syndrome resulting in his death.  There are specific guidelines as to how this condition is to be treated; and the doctors did not follow those guidelines. Case settled for significant amount.

Medical personnel are trained to recognize symptoms of various ailments so that a proper diagnosis can be given. When a doctor fails to diagnose or treat a condition the result can have a serious impact on the patient such as permanent injury or death. If you or someone you care about suffered a serious injury as a result of a doctor’s failure to treat a medical condition such as hyponatremia, contact us.
