Cook Medical IVC Filter Lawsuits Consolidated
More than 20 lawsuits have been filed against Cook Medical alleging serious injury related to the Cook Celect inferior vena cava (IVC) filter and the Cook Gunther Tulip inferior vena cava (IVC) filter. In October 2014, the United States Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) approved the consolidation of these lawsuits before United States District Judge Richard L. Young in the Southern District of Indiana. Consolidating these lawsuits conserves resources for all parties involved in the litigation and can help provide consistent court rulings.
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a safety warning in 2010 related to the use of the Cook Celect IVC and the Cook Gunther Tulip IVC filters. The warning was the result of more than 900 adverse events reports filed with the FDA since 2005. Patients implanted with the devices experienced filter migration, filter breakage, blood vessel and organ perforation, and separation of filter components. These events caused internal bleeding, dangerous blood clots, and severe pain.
