Cohen & Malad, LLP Celebrates Nine Years of Race for the Cure
Cohen & Malad, LLP lawyers and staff are well on their way to another record year of fundraising for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The firm’s team captains include paralegals Lottie Wathen, Jodie Bergeron, and professional staff member Cierra Gaither. Paralegal Tonya Brock stepped up to help the fundraising efforts this year by making a quilt using team t-shirts from previous years. The quilt will be raffled off on April 2nd with all funds going to Cohen & Malad, LLP’s Race for the Cure team.
Cohen & Malad, LLP first organized a team for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in 2006 shortly after beginning litigation against pharmaceutical manufacturers of hormone replacement therapy drugs. Many of the plaintiffs represented by the firm suffered serious injuries including breast cancer and death. Attorneys and staff banned together with clients and their families to help raise money to fund breast cancer research through the Susan G. Komen foundation. Several members of the Cohen & Malad, LLP Race for the Cure team walked in honor of friends and loved ones who have battled breast cancer. Team Captain and family law paralegal, Lottie Wathen, walks and helps spearhead this fundraising effort because she is a 4 year breast cancer survivor. “Almost everyone knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer. To be fortunate enough to work in a place where nearly every person, from the managing partner to the newest support staff member, is involved in such a wonderful cause is a true blessing. I will never forget how supportive my Cohen & Malad, LLP family was during my diagnosis, surgeries and recovery”, said Wathen.
Each year, the Cohen & Malad, LLP Race for the Cure team captains strive to come up with creative ways to help raise money. The team captains have hosted several bake sales. Staff members donated homemade treats to be sold in the break room to raise funds for the team. The bake sales then turned into hot lunches. This year, the Race for the Cure captains have hosted two hot lunches with plans for one more. One of the lunches featured several homemade soups, bread and dessert. The other lunch included meatball subs, chips, and a cupcake. Like the bake sale goods, the lunches are donated and all proceeds from the sale of the meals are donated to the Race for the Cure team.
The first quilt (pictured) was actually purchased by the firm for $500 and will be displayed in the office. Tonya was able to make an additional quilt for the raffle. So far, the Cohen & Malad, LLP Race for the Cure team has raised over $150 just from raffle tickets for the quilt and more than $1,000 overall. “We are proud of our attorneys and staff who have made the commitment to help support the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and breast cancer research,” said office administrator, Jerry Abramowitz.
