Battle Over Hard-Wired Smoke Detectors in Bloomington Heats Up
Property owners are currently in a legal battle with the city of Bloomington, Indiana, over a new requirement that rental units have hard-wired smoke detectors. Bloomington City Council passed the ordinance in November 2012 requiring the use of hard-wired detectors over battery-operated smoke detectors.
Attorney Michael McBride is representing the property owners in this matter and argues that the city ordinance in unenforceable because Indiana state law allows for either type of smoke detector. The Bloomington Herald Times reports on this issue and continues to follow this litigation. The next hearing is scheduled for January 27, 2014 in the Monroe Circuit Court.
