FDA Issues Safety Warning for ADHD Medications
The FDA warns physicians and patients of serious health risks associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medications such as Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin/Focalin XR, Metadate CD/Metadate ER, Methylin/Methylin ER, Quillivant XR, Ritalin/Ritalin LA/Ritalin SR. These drugs containing methylphenidate and atomotxetine may cause prolonged erections in male patients, a condition known as priapism. Priapism is a serious condition that happens when blood in the penis is trapped and causes an abnormally long-lasting and sometimes painful erection. If not treated, priapism can cause permanent damage to the penis and other significant injuries.
The FDA cautions that younger patients may be embarrassed or unaware of the problem when it occurs and stresses the need for physicians to educate male patients regarding the seriousness of the condition.
