Bloomberg News recently reported that Bayer has now settled over 1,800 lawsuits with women who suffered blood clots after taking Yaz or Yasmin birth control pills. Yaz and Yasmin are oral contraceptives that contain the synthetic hormone drospirenone. The FDA reviewed studies indicating drospirenone increased a patient’s risk of developing blood clots and ordered Bayer to strengthen its patient safety warnings for birth control pills containing this hormone. Blood clots can lead to serious injuries for patients including heart attacks and strokes.
Bayer issued a statement to its shareholders disclosing that it has already paid $402 million in settlementsfor an average of $212,000 per case. The company also stated that it has put aside an additional $600 millionto cover litigation costs associated with the other 12,000 cases that are filed by women who claim blood clot-related injuries.
