The U.S. Food and Drug Administration - FDA released a safety alert Tuesday stating that physicians and patients should be aware of an increased risk for blood clots in women taking drospirenone-containing birth control pills. Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella are a few of the brand names of birth control pills that contain drospirenone, a man-made version of the female hormone progesterone.

The FDA met with a panel of experts in December 2012 to discuss the health risks associated with birth control pills that contain drospirenone. In that meeting, the FDA determined, based on data from 5 large studies that patients using this type of birth control were at an increased risk for developing blood clots. These blood clots could trigger more serious injuries such as heart attacks, strokes, pulmonary embolisms, and possibly death.
